Summary

This session takes a deep dive into demystifying what "accessible colors" are. This session empowers designers to make confident color choices and eliminates the excuse of "accessibility has to be boring." We cover what tools you will need, how to evaluate color palettes, and how to audit current themes with time-saving ways to make small changes to bring them into compliance.

Abstract

We have all heard that "accessible documents have to be boring" to pass compliance. The truth is that this is simply not the case. Attendees will learn the importance of color contrast, color perception, and color blindness, and how to apply these principles to create designs that are easy to read and navigate for all users. We cover color evaluation tools, color palettes, and color combinations, as well as best practices for designing for accessibility. Attendees will learn methodical workflows from a series of example design projects, and will also learn how to use tools and resources to test and improve the accessibility of their designs.

Keypoints

  1. Accessible document design does not have to be dull and boring.
  2. Understanding how colors work together is key in creating vibrant and accessible documents
  3. Being able to properly evaluate color choices empowers designers, not limits them.
