Summary

This session will discuss and demonstrate Able Player, a free open source HTML5 media player that includes fully accessible controls and supports captions, audio description, interactive transcripts, and has many options that enable users to customize their experience.

Abstract

Media is everywhere, and is excluding students, employees, and visitors with disabilities in greater and greater numbers. There is growing awareness related to the need for captions, but captions alone do not make video accessible. This session will provide the big picture of accessible media - all the issues that should be considered when planning for deployment of audio or video on web pages. This session will walk attendees step-by-step through all the accessibility considerations, and will include code-level solutions for how each consideration can be addressed. The end product is a media player called Able Player, developed at the University of Washington and now an open source project with multiple institutions contributing to its further development.
