Summary

In this presentation, we go over some of the most successful strategies a higher education institution might implement to encourage engagement across campus in order to achieve web accessibility requirements.

Abstract

The Challenge: Higher Education Institutions often have substantial portfolios of websites. 508 and the ADA (among other laws) require website accessibility for higher education institutions. Some colleges and universities are more successful in improving web accessibility than others are.

After having worked with multiple higher education institutions over the past 4 years, we have learned a lot about what works and what doesn't work.

The Secret Sauces: The two secret sauces for web accessibility success in higher education are 1) consistency of efforts & 2) engaging the teams of web creators and content providers across campus to participate in the effort. These two "secrets" to web accessibility often go hand in hand.

In this presentation, we go over the most successful strategies a higher education institution might implement. These strategies when consistently applied will yield greater participation across campus and result in better, longer-term outcomes in web accessibility.

These strategies come from our own observations working with higher education institutions as well as responses by web accessibility champions, coordinators, and team leads from multiple campuses.

Keypoints

  1. Higher Education websites must be accessible (by law)
  2. Engaging the teams of web creators and content providers is often a critical part of successful web initiative
  3. Implementing a only handful of strategies consistently can substantially improve web accessibility
