Summary

Drawing on research and suggestions from the accessibility community, participants will be guided to experiment with Chat GPT in order to discuss how it might help students with visible and invisible disabilities and to identify possible barriers or negatives of the technology for those students. Though we will look at some literature, it will be an interactive session with brainstorming to generate practical applications that participants can take back to their educational communities.

Abstract

Chat GPT is all the buzz: from education to industry, even as tool for personal use with everyday tasks, you cannot go a day without seeing a news article or blog post about the chatbot. For accessibility and disability professionals, exploring what Chat GPT means for users with disabilities is a critical conversation.

In this session, we will experiment with Chat GPT in order to discuss how it might help students with visible and invisible disabilities. We will brainstorm to identify possible barriers or pitfalls of the technology for those students. Though we will begin with a brief exploration of research and suggestions from the accessibility community surrounding Chat GPT, this will be an interactive session to generate practical applications that you can take back to your educational or business communities.

Krystal Iseminger

Krystal Iseminger is the Director of Accessibility at WSU Tech where she enjoys advocating for access and equity across the college, supporting and training faculty and staff on accessibility best practices, and teaching Composition as an adjunct. Her commitment to promoting accessibility in education was fostered during her time as an Instructional Designer/Online Lecturer for Wichita State University and continues as she pursues her Doctorate of Education in Higher Education Leadership at Baker University. She is also passionate about her new role as Director of the virtual Accessibility Summer Camp conference hosted by WSU Tech.
