Summary

Today's student body is increasingly diverse. Whist the Deaf and Hard of Hearing have acknowledged needs, new groups such as those with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), mental health issues, anxiety and depression and those who have English as an additional language also have access needs. New solutions such as Remote Live note taking can provide universal access for all.

Abstract

Increasing aspiration in disability groups, ADA support and the attendance of non traditional groups, means that colleges and universities have a more diverse student population than ever before. Students with an ASD, those with mental health issues, students with English as a second language amongst others, such as carers, need access to content but have differing access issues. An answer might be found in Remote Live Notetaking.

For many students listening and writing at the same time is difficult. For those with audio processing issues, shorter concentration spans or difficulty in understanding what is being said, it's even more problematic. Remote, live notetaking with its free transcript offers a second chance at learning. It can be delivered to all students, via a screen, as well as to individual students on a phone or laptop. It is non-stigmatising and can provide a universal answer to all including those student body who may not have declared their difficulty.

Keypoints

  1. The student body is now diverse and includes different disabiliites and many non -traditional groups
  2. The reasons for needing access are also now much more diverse
