Summary
Come learn about the current state of assistive technology and accessibility testing on mobile devices in 2020. Get hands-on experiences using the built-in assistive technology and settings. Once familiar with the AT attendees will learn at a high level how to use the AT, tools and techniques for accessibility evaluation.
Abstract
The education environment in 2020 has changed drastically. We will explore how Learners from all walks of life are utilizing mobile devices running Android & iOS to consume content. These devices come with built-in assistive technology (AT) that allow people with disabilities to access content on the web and through Apps. Come learn about the current state of mobile assistive technology. Every new year Google and Apple improve and iterate the available assistive technology on their platforms. We will both discuss and experience the available assistive technologies including the different settings that will help provide access to content for as many users as possible. Once familiar with the AT attendees will learn at a high level how to use the AT, tools and techniques for accessibility evaluation. These evaluation methods will help users evaluate mobile content for potential accessibility barriers.

Joe Humbert
Joe Humbert, Senior Accessibility Engineer at The Paciello Group (TPG), brings a breadth and depth of accessibility experience that is both engaging and transformative for organizations applying over 14 years of experience supporting & engaging in accessibility efforts. Joe is a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility (CPWA, 2018) through the IAAP organization. His experience combines implementing accessibility at an institutional level, a technical background in web development and design, as well as an extensive background in Special Education and Accessibility. Before joining The Paciello Group, he spent 13 years working in higher education at two Big Ten universities supporting students, faculty, and staff with disabilities with creating and engaging with accessible content. He believes in and uses a people-centered approach to accessibility. Joe currently serves at the Native Mobile lead at TPG helping clients of all sizes ensure that their mobile applications are accessible to the widest audience regardless of disability.
