Summary

This presentation explores the core concepts of semiotics—syntax, pragmatics, and semantics—and their role in creating accessible designs. We will guide you through designing semantically accessible elements for iOS and web, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established principles and guidelines

Abstract

Semantics is the foundational layer of semiotics, which also includes syntax and pragmatics. Syntax establishes the structural framework of information, ensuring that elements are organized in a coherent and logical manner. Pragmatics, on the other hand, deals with the interpretation of this information, considering the context and the intended meaning. Together, these aspects culminate in the semantics of the information, which is the meaningful and accessible presentation of content.

This session will take you on a comprehensive journey to create semantically accessible elements for both iOS and the web. Often, in the rush of the design process, we neglect established principles and guidelines, which can undermine the semantic integrity of our components and elements. Over-customization, while visually appealing, can lead to components that are not semantically accessible. Hence, it is essential to embed the principles of semiotics—syntax, pragmatics, and semantics—into every stage of design.

We will explore how to properly annotate and document features for keyboard and screen reader accessibility. Keyboard accessibility ensures that all functions can be performed without a mouse, which is crucial for users with motor impairments. Screen reader accessibility allows visually impaired users to interact with your content through audio feedback. Proper annotation and documentation of these features are vital to creating an inclusive user experience.

Incorporating semantics into the design system from the beginning can greatly reduce the costs and efforts associated with retrofitting accessibility features at later stages. This proactive approach ensures that accessibility is a fundamental aspect of the design process, rather than an afterthought. We will cover how to document accessibility guidelines within your design system, providing clear instructions for maintaining semantic integrity throughout the lifecycle of your project.
