Summary

We will discuss noteworthy recent matters from the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

Abstract

The Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education enforces Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the ADA, as well as civil rights laws protecting people on the bases of race, color, and national origin; gender; and age. Come to this presentation to learn more about noteworthy disability cases that arose within the past year, including areas of emphasis.

Mary Lou Mobley

Mary Lou Mobley graduated from Duke University in 1990 with a law degree and a Master’s in Philosophy. After clerking for a Federal judge, she joined the Federal government in Washington, DC, as a Trial Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Disability Rights Section, where she earned numerous awards including the John Marshall Award for Distinguished Service. In 2006, she moved to Denver and joined the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, where she currently serves as OCR’s National Disability Expert and Lead of OCR's National Digital Access Team.

Rebecca Tanglen

Rebecca Tanglen is a Senior Regional Attorney in OCR’s Denver regional office. Before going to law school, Ms. Tanglen was a public school teacher in the Texas Rio Grande Valley for three years. After graduating from the University of Colorado Law School, she served as a judicial law clerk for a Colorado Supreme Court justice. She has also worked as an attorney for children and teens involved in child welfare and juvenile delinquency cases. Ms. Tanglen joined OCR’s Denver regional office in 2010.
