DS and IT professionals often speak different languages with different jargon and acronyms, which can lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings. This presentation will promote a better understanding so that students with disabilities can receive the most effective services.
Abstract
In today’s fast paced world, technology is an essential element of providing effective accommodations. However, the average support service staff may not have training in technology. Therefore, establishing good relationships with the campus IT department is critical. However, most techies don’t speak the same language as everyone else. Sometimes the language barriers can be as great between techies and non-techies as between deaf and hearing. While this is said facetiously it is often too close to the truth.
This presentation will focus on effective methods of collaboration between disability services and technology departments. Often IT professionals are not familiar with disability accommodations or adaptive technology. Support services staff needs to learn enough about technology and the lingo to communicate their needs and those of the students.

Cindy Camp
Cindy Camp has worked in disability support services for 20 years. She specializes in working with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. She is an interpreter, C-Print captionist, and C-Print trainer. She has designed and maintains websites for various groups and organizations. She contracts with the Described and Captioned Media Program to enhance access through the use of captions. She heads a group at JSU to establish accessibility standards in online learning and is working to caption materials on our iTunes U site. She has presented at many local, state, and national conferences on topics such as post production captioning, accommodating students in online courses, and accessible technology.
