Summary
Ever wondered what an ADA Coordinator does (or is supposed to do)? This is the session for you! After briefly exploring the legal basis in the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act, this session will cover the main duties of the designated “responsible employee,” often called the ADA or ADA/Section 504 Coordinator. More importantly, the session will present ideas for incorporating your Coordinator into your work and ways in which you can partner with them to further support accessibility on campus.
Abstract
Public entities subject to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and entities receiving federal funding subject to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are required to have a specified individual responsible for coordinating the entity’s efforts to meet its Title II and Section 504 obligations. Often called ADA Coordinators, or ADA/504 Coordinators, these individuals bear the responsibility for compliance. However, often there is a gap between these Coordinators and those working on accessibility day-in and day-out in other areas of campus, like student accommodations, accessible e-resources, or inclusive design in course curriculum. By learning more about what Coordinators do, this session will empower those working outside of the Coordinator’s office to bridge this gap and identify ways in which they can work with their Coordinator to make a more accessible campus. There will be time reserved in the presentation for participants to brainstorm and share concrete ways this partnership might work at their campus.
Keypoints
- Under Title II of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, entities must designate a Coordinator.
- A Coordinator’s role in compliance intersects with other accessibility work throughout campus.
- There are ways in which you can partner with your entity’s Coordinator to assist in your work!
