Summary of Session

Go beyond the basics of Web Accessibility to learn how to ensure websites and web-based applications are accessible.

Abstract

Introductory materials in web accessibility are critical in learning the basic concerns for creating an accessible website. Unfortunately there exists a chasm of information missing between introductions and highly advanced topics like WAI-ARIA. In this session, Billy Gregory and Karl Groves will go over a large array of web development best practices in use in modern websites and ways to make those features more accessible. Learn things like how to implement keyboard accessibility and focus management in dynamic content & controls and how to make highly interactive websites more accessible.

Keypoints

  1. Real world accessibility in complex websites
  2. Highly interactive widgets and accessibility
  3. Basics of JavaScript accessibility

Speaker Bio(s)

Karl Groves

An unstoppable force for change and thought-leader in an industry regarded for saying “No”, I’d rather lead by example in saying “Yes, and here’s how…”. I seek to offer solutions to complex problems relating to universal usability. I have over a decade experience in doing IT consulting for the biggest companies in the world and biggest agencies in the US Government. Widely regarded as a pragmatic solution-finder, my work is cited in nearly a dozen books and used on curricula in Human-Computer Interaction across the globe. I lead by doing, I teach from experience, and I succeed by facilitating others’ success. When others say, “That can’t be done” I show them how. Together we can meet both our goals: your business goals and my goals to lead the way in accessible user experience.

Billy Gregory

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Billy Gregory is a Sr. Accessibility Engineer with The Paciello Group. In his spare time, Billy is active in the Accessibility Community as Co-Organizer of "A11yTO" which organizes Accessibility Camp Toronto and it's monthly meet-up group.
