Summary of Session

The PDF Planning workshop will review various strategies and best practices for managing the backlog of PDFs on many campuses, as well as options for moving from PDF to other formats, like HTML and ePub. Attendees will learn how to streamline processes to enhance disability services management and ensure online course accessibility.

Abstract

PDFs are prevalent across campuses, and present unique challenges to disability services professionals and instructional designers. What are the pros and cons of maintaining PDFs and how can we make them more accessible? What other viable formats are there, and how can establishing new processes for content creators and faculty save time and improve productivity? We will look at best practices from other universities, and discuss new formats like HTML and ePub and why providing these formats in addition to PDF improves accessibility campus wide. Disability services professionals and Instructional Designers will also learn about new tools that enable them to make scanned documents and images more accessible. Attendees will also learn new workflow ideas to help automate the conversion of inaccessible documents and share accessible content across campus departments.

Keypoints

  1. Learn best practices to improve workflow in converting inaccessible PDFs.
  2. Learn why HTML may be the new standard in creating accessible content.
  3. Learn about new resources to streamline the manual conversion of PDFs.
