| This session will not be a technical discussion about the ins and outs of web accessibility but instead will be an interactive discussion about the lessons one campus has learned in creating and implementing Web Accessibility Policy. The focus will be compliance and outreach rather than web design. |
Abstract |
| This session will review: Purdue’s journey to gaining buy-in for a Web Accessibility Policy; the process for drafting a policy; the implementation of the policy; training and support; ensuring compliance; and future steps that will continue to help Purdue come into full compliance with section 508 standards and the ADA. We will review our policy by discussing what worked and what was less successful. We will describe how the Office of Institutional Equity and the volunteer Web Accessibility Committee worked together to educate the campus on its obligations. A variety of approaches to educating campus communities about web accessibility will be considered. Lastly, we will discuss the current status of our policy as well as next steps to ensure our campus remains in compliance with section 508 standards and the ADA in the face of ever-changing technology. |
Dean Brusnighan is an Assistive Technology Specialist on Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus. His primary focus is on long-term and campus-wide IT accessibility needs. He consults with faculty and staff, and provides training on creating inclusive instructional materials. Dean advocates for improved accessibility policy and practice. He is also an active member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance IT Accessibility Group.
Mary Ann Ferkis is the Assistant Dean of Students for Academic Adjustments at Purdue University’s Disability Resource Center (DRC). Her primary role is to provide leadership and supervision to the DRC through coordination and implementation of academic adjustments as mandated under Sections 504, 508, and the ADA. Additionally, she oversees the provision of education and resources to faculty regarding web accessibility and technology access issues.
