Summary of Session

The presenters will provide an overview of the most recent literature on universal design for instruction (UDI) as based upon a comprehensive literature review.

Abstract

Universal Design for Instruction (UDI) in postsecondary education is a relatively new concept/framework that has generated significant support. The presenters will report on findings from an extensive literature review that examines the existing empirical research, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods, on the use of UDI (and related terms) in postsecondary education. The findings will be presented and a discussion held on how UDI can be applied in distance education courses and the benefits and disadvantages.

Speaker Bio(s)

Kelly Roberts

Kelly D. Roberts, PhD is a Professor at the Center on Disability Studies (CDS) at the University of Hawai`i. She has developed curricula related to educating postsecondary education faulty in meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities. She has also conducted extensive higher education faculty professional development.

Robert Stodden

Robert Stodden, Ph.D., is the founding Director of the Center on Disability Studies and Professor of Disability Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. He has also served as President of the Association of University Centers on Disability (AUCD) and several other professional associations in the disability field. Dr. Stodden has served as chairperson of the Department of Special Education at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and Coordinator of Career/Vocational Special Needs Graduate Programs at Boston College. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Stodden has served as principal investigator/director of more than 150 research and training projects spanning numerous areas of disability study, including secondary school transition, participation in STEM education and careers, postsecondary education, and employment for youth with special learning and behavior needs.
