| This all-day, hands-on workshop covers accessible e-book creation using Adobe InDesign to produce EPUB 2 and 3 and PDF books. We will work from prepared content materials and cover the ins and outs, pitfalls and glories, of creation of accessible PDF and EPUB books. InDesign is a commonly used tool for layout of books, but authors will need to work beyond the visual appearance to make their electronic books accessible to readers with disabilities. Additionally, InDesign, though a robust tool for print publication, can present difficulties when creating accessible e-books. We will begin by discussing the limits to accessibility due to format and available e-reading technologies, and then move into hands-on work in e-book creation. We will cover handling content order and semantics issues, along with inclusion of captioned multimedia and mathematics. We will also cover markup of potentially problematic elements, such as data tables. For both PDF and EPUB created from InDesign it will be necessary to touch up the books after they are exported. To this end, we will show attendees how to edit tag structures and address content order issues using Acrobat Pro and will explore ways to add multimedia and MathML (or alternatives) using an EPUB editor. Finally, we will use a screen reader to work through parts of our books and access their accessibility. |
