Summary of Session

In entering college, some students struggle to read large quantities of text, comprehend complex materials and demonstrate their knowledge. This session will address how assistive technology can provide students with the ability keep up with assignments, succeed academically and graduate on time.

Abstract

For students who struggle to read, write, and comprehend at college level due to learning disabilities such as dyslexia, or who are English Language Learners, military veterans, or athletes, the amount of out-of-class reading hours can increase dramatically and jeopardize their ability to complete coursework or even to graduate. Assistive technology (AT), and in particular Kurzweil 3000-firefly, provides tools for postsecondary students that support reading, writing, comprehension and effective study skills in a platform agnostic environment that can help them meet the rigorous demands of college courses. In this presentation, attendees will see the literacy tools built in to Kurzweil 3000-firefly, that enable students to work independently, learn at their own pace and achieve their dreams.
