Summary

Instructional design is the creation of engaging learning experiences through the analysis of learner needs. This talk will cover how John Wiley and Sons developed a corporate accessibility training program to not only build accessibility awareness but result in the development of accessible products and services. It will cover a discussion around training options, how to design the program and materials according to learner and organizational needs, gain support, and measure success.

Abstract

There are many methods for training teams at scale. How this is decided and implemented must be based on an understanding of the organization’s structure, the learning preferences of your colleagues, and the technology solutions that are available in your organization to support it.

In 2023, Wiley developed an accessibility training program that was made available to all colleagues on a global scale. This talk will focus on: • The impact of accessibility training within a greater accessibility maturity model • Program goals and challenges • Strategies for securing funding • Project deliverables with a focus on blended learning materials • Training development phases • Corporate communication strategies • Program results and next steps

Christina Volpe

Christina Volpe is the Accessibility Solutions Lead for Wiley Research and Learning where she creates, drives, and socializes accessibility guidelines and strategies. During her tenure with Wiley, she established Wiley’s corporate accessibility technology standards, developed Wiley’s first digital accessibility training program, and standardized technology assessment workflows. She is the founder and chair of the Wiley Accessibility Guild and leads the Awareness for Visible and Invisible Disabilities Employee Resource Group’s Accessibility Committee. Christina has more than a decade of experience in digital publishing. Prior to joining Wiley in 2011, she held various editorial positions with Hospitality Technology Magazine and Pearson Education.
