Summary

Given the legal climate, this presentation will take a look at future advancements and requirements for closed captioning as they relate to higher education.

Abstract

While every year is active in the federal and state courts, 2015 saw several cases focused on the accessibility of online content. These cases demonstrate that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Office for Civil Rights (OCR) are taking a more comprehensive position on digital access and closed captioning, and organizations across industries should take note of the precedents being set to better understand their legal obligations. This presentation will cover the impact of these decisions on current and future requirements for closed captioning at the university level. We will also look at the future of closed captioning itself. How will technology keep up with these requirements? What trends are we seeing in the industry? Will humans always be necessary in the captioning process? How can you utilize captioning to benefit all viewers? This presentation will address these questions and demonstrate some of the technical advancements that are already being developed for closed captioning.
