Summary
Mathematics content must be accessible to persons with disabilities. We will look at the techniques that deliver accessible math in Microsoft Office 365. We will demonstrate techniques with assistive Technology (AT) and explain how Microsoft Office 365 has made numerous accessibility improvements in the equation editor. We will provide a preview of upcoming accessible math improvements for PDF files.
Abstract
With the new Title II regulations about to take effect, all digital content from colleges and universities must meet accessibility requirements. Mathematics and STEM content has been the most difficult type of materials to deliver. Due to improvements in the Microsoft equation editor, it is now possible to read and write accessible math using Office 365.
There have been tremendous developments in tools and techniques to create more accessible math content in the past few years.
In this session we will demonstrate the latest best practices and techniques for delivering accessible mathematical content in Office 365. We will use both JAWS and NVDA in conjunction with MathCAT to show improvements in math accessibility. We will also demonstrate improvements in creating accessible math content in the PDF format. All participants will receive an electronic copy of the math guide.

Darrin Evans is an Accessibility Technologist and the Director of the North Carolina Virtual Learning Communities Professional Development Center. Darrin has a Master’s in Instructional Technology Darrin has over 15 years of experience in eLearning and accessibility of digital content. The Virtual Learning Community is a partnership between the 58 community colleges of the North Carolina Community College System and Wake Technical Community College. Darrin enjoys technology and is always looking for ways to make digital content more accessible to all learners. In his spare time he is a very slow marathon swimmer.
