Summary
Accessible STEM education doesn’t have to require costly specialized tools. This session explores practical, budget-friendly strategies for creating inclusive technical curricula using Universal Design for Learning, Open Educational Resources, browser-based tools, virtual simulators, and modular hardware. Attendees will learn how thoughtful design and resource choices can reduce barriers and expand access for diverse learners.
Abstract
Building an inclusive STEM program does not have to require expensive technology, specialized equipment, or a large budget. With thoughtful instructional design and strategic use of free and low-cost resources, institutions can create accessible learning experiences while making the most of limited resources.
This session explores practical strategies for designing accessible and economically sustainable STEM curricula. Participants will learn how Open Educational Resources, open-source tools, web-based simulations, and flexible digital content can reduce both accessibility and financial barriers. Browser-based and cloud technologies can also expand access to advanced learning experiences by allowing students to complete technical work without requiring high-powered personal devices or costly software.
The session will also examine how inclusive teaching practices can make complex technical concepts more approachable for diverse learners. Strategies include presenting information in multiple formats, incorporating clear visuals and descriptions, designing activities with accessible entry points, and providing students with flexible options for demonstrating their knowledge.
For hands-on learning, participants will explore ways to stretch limited technology budgets through affordable modular hardware, virtual environments, and device-lending programs or community partnerships.
Attendees will leave with practical ideas for creating accessible STEM learning experiences that can be implemented without significant new investment. By combining inclusive pedagogy, flexible technology, and thoughtful resource planning, institutions can reduce barriers, expand participation, and provide more students with equitable opportunities to succeed in technical disciplines.
