Summary of Session

Accessibility is all about making product accessible to users with disabilities. Getting feedback from users with disabilities was key in driving design decisions for the Course Connect product.


Usability testing with users with disabilities uncovers both general usability issues within the product for all learners but also challenges in accessing content with assistive technology. This session is a case study that will walk through the user research conducted, the changes made as a result of this research and the impact it had on the Course Connect product.

Kathy Wahlbin

Kathy Wahlbin is an accessibility expert in Section 508 and W3C WCAG compliance and CEO and founder of Interactive Accessibility. She is an experienced digital media designer with extensive knowledge of accessibility and usability issues and solutions. She is passionate about creating a world where online communications and technology are simple and universally accessible to all people regardless of ability. Kathy leads the Boston Accessibility group and is an invited expert on the W3C WCAG 2.0 Working Group and WCAG 2.0 Evaluation Methodology Task Force.

Tina Piper

Dr. Tina Piper is a technical project manager for Pearson Education. She earned her doctoral degree in Instructional Design and Technology, and her master degree in School Psychology from the University of Memphis. She also earned her master degree in Computer-based Education, and her B.S. in Psychology from Beijing Normal University. Dr. Piper has traveled the world, and has helped bring the world's knowledge to thousands of students. As an expert in education and technology, she has helped design and implements instructional systems for delivering all forms of learning. As a PMI certified professional project manager with excellent problem solving skills, Dr. Piper has a consistent track record of success in the management of business critical projects for Pearson Education. She has a reputation for bottom-line orientation, high quality and on-time delivery in challenging situation.
