Summary of Session

Learn to apply Universal Design principles and creative problem solving techniques to creating an interactive and accessible learning experience for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.


Universal Design (UD) for learning is a popular concept. However, the theory is often easier to advocate for than implement. It is easy to see that adding a ramp and electronic doors to a building make it accessible to those in wheelchairs, but also to mothers with strollers and delivery people to name a few. It is not easy to justify UD for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH); due to the complexity and expense involved. Due to diversity in the group there is not a single answer for access. However, with creativity, access solutions can be found that utilize both cutting edge technology and traditional methodologies. Solutions need to be proactive and appropriate. As with all UD approaches the goal is to develop a better learning experience for everyone, not to focus on the deficits of a small group of individuals. The goal is not to create a “one size fits all” approach but to create flexible approaches that can be easily adapted to a variety of learners

Speaker Bio(s)

Cindy Camp

Cindy Camp has worked in disability support services for 20 years. She specializes in working with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. She is an interpreter, C-Print captionist, and C-Print trainer. She has designed and maintains websites for various groups and organizations. She contracts with the Described and Captioned Media Program to enhance access through the use of captions. She heads a group at JSU to establish accessibility standards in online learning and is working to caption materials on our iTunes U site. She has presented at many local, state, and national conferences on topics such as post production captioning, accommodating students in online courses, and accessible technology.

Mark Camp

Mark Camp is a distance education specialist at Jacksonville State University in Alabama. He has worked in postsecondary distance education for over 14 years. Prior to that, he worked with disability support services providing access to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. He has presented regionally and nationally on topics of technology and accessibility. He started an accessibility committee at JSU and is the co-chair of the SACS Quality Enhancement Plan committee.
