In this session we will walk through the history and future of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act to better understand its role in your organization’s policies.
Abstract
This session provides an essential guide to understanding the history, myth, legend, and destiny of Section 508. The truth about Section 508 and its impact on institutional policies are best explained when we separate the law from its standards. We will explore the genesis of Section 508 and its torrid affair with WCAG, deconstruct its complexity and simplify it, and then we’ll figure out how its “Refresh” will really affect our individual and institutional responsibilities.

William Lawrence
William is a Senior Accessibility Specialist at TriTech Enterprise Systems, on assignment with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). He is the subject matter expert to the DOL for Section 508 compliance and functional accessibility for Web and mobile information and communication technologies. He is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the accessibility and Section 508 compliance strategy for the DOL.
