A Political War on Disability: Eugenics, the Ugly Laws, and How We Can Fight Back

Mia Ives-Rublee is the senior director for the Disability Justice Initiative at American Progress. Prior to coming to American Progress, she advocated for disability justice and inclusion at nonprofit organizations and businesses across the United States. She will talk about disability rights in the current political environment, and how to respond to the current challenges and opportunities.
Mia Ives-Rublee is currently the director of the Disability Justice Initiative at the Center for American Progress and speaks both nationally and internationally on disability and civil rights issues. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master’s degree in social work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mia began her career at the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, where she helped disabled people obtain employment and community services. She also worked at UNC as a research assistant studying the impacts of first responders dealing with mental health crisis events and as a confidential assistant to Commissioner Chai Feldblum. Mia gained recognition when she started community organizing nationally and she contracted with progressive organizations including the Women’s March, Families Belong Together, Planned Parenthood, and many others. Mia also has extensive experience working on political campaigns, including the Elizabeth Warren and the then Vice President Joe Biden’s campaigns for President. In her free time, you can find her paddle boarding or hanging out with her service dog Vizzini.
