Learn how to move beyond a checkbox mindset and apply practical strategies to ensure your content is not just compliant, but truly usable.
Abstract
Accessibility checkers are often treated as the final authority on whether content is compliant. Run the checker, resolve the flags, and move on. But anyone who has spent time with assistive technology knows a different reality. Passing a checker does not guarantee that content is usable.
This session takes a deeper look at the gap between automated testing and real user experience. Attendees will see how common document elements such as tables, lists, figures, ligatures, language settings, and reading order can pass automated checks while still creating significant barriers for screen reader users. These issues are not edge cases. They show up in everyday content and often go unnoticed because they fall outside the scope of rule-based detection.
Using the NVDA screen reader, we will test real-world documents in key scenarios to reveal how these hidden barriers surface in practice. You will hear how poorly structured tables lose meaning, how incorrect or missing language settings affect pronunciation and comprehension, and how ligatures and character substitutions can disrupt the reading experience. We will also explore how tagging and reading order can quietly undermine accessibility even when no errors are reported.
More importantly, this session focuses on what to do about it. Attendees will learn how to move beyond a checkbox mindset and adopt a usability-first approach. Practical strategies will be shared for validating content with assistive technology, identifying high-risk patterns, and making informed remediation decisions that improve the actual user experience.
