Summary

Become more confident and comfortable in determining accessibility conformance by learning how to leverage the body of knowledge published by the World Wide Web Consortium by focusing on Understanding documentation and other necessary resources.

Abstract

When determining conformance, it is critical that an accessibility auditor/evaluator is comfortable referring to the documentation published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). For many accessibility professionals, the documentation seems intimidating and difficult to approach. My experience moving from, at most, very high level evaluations to very in-depth evaluations taught me how to better use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) resources published by the W3C. This session will include an introduction to the format of the WCAG documentation, including detailed discussion about the “Understanding” documents and how the normative and non-normative details are vital to determining conformance. I will use specific example success criteria (SC) to demonstrate how to use WCAG documentation to arrive at a confident conclusion regarding conformance. I will also discuss how to identify which SC a given issue may fall under for those who need to cross reference barriers with SC. Finally, I will include additional resources such as the ARIA Authoring Practices Guide, MDN’s granular element and attribute documentation, and WebAIM’s evaluation checklist to support evaluators.

Keypoints

  1. Understand the common elements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Understanding documents.
  2. Learn how to discern conformance with at least 3 real world examples, discussed during the session.
  3. Identify at least 2 additional resources outside of WCAG docs that help determine conformance and guide fixes.
