Summary
This presentation aims to share the experience of the Arts and Sciences Division at Lansing Community College in their creation of an Accessibility Team in their office. Presenters will share what brought about the creation of this team, how it works to support faculty, how it interacts with other accessibility resources, and suggestions on how to replicate their work on other campuses.
Abstract
Lansing Community College (LCC) undertook a campus-wide digital accessibility initiative several years ago with the goal of drastically improving access for people with disabilities. As LCC shifted from an intensive phase to a maintenance phase, several options for supporting faculty and other content creators with accessibility were developed. The Arts and Sciences Accessibility Team is one such resource serving the largest academic unit on campus. This presentation will focus on the development of the Accessibility Team, how it works, and how the team supplements existing resources for faculty. We will also give tips for creating a team within an academic department and how replicate this on your campus.
Keypoints
- An accessibility team in an academic unit can handle unusual/difficult documents or courses.
- A project coordinator can help ensure that the accessibility work of a team is manageable and on time.
- Accessibility support for faculty does not remove their responsibility for ensuring content is accessible.
