Summary
This session equips attendees to design workshops that teach educators to create accessible, inclusive instructional presentations for diverse learners. The presenter will share practical strategies and resources for applying accessibility best practices and creating environments that foster equitable learning at their institutions.
Abstract
Today’s higher education landscape demands instructional materials that are accessible to all learners, including those with vision, hearing, learning, and cognitive challenges. However, many educators lack practical guidance in creating and delivering presentations that serve diverse audiences. This session addresses this gap by equipping conference attendees with the knowledge and resources to design and facilitate workshops on providing accessible and inclusive instructional presentations.
In this interactive session, presenters will model effective strategies for teaching instructors and staff how to develop resilient multimedia presentations using high-tech and no-tech solutions. Attendees will learn how to guide workshop participants in applying accessibility best practices to lecture recordings, slideshows, and multimedia content. Key topics include: describing visual elements for audio tracks and captions, selecting accessible fonts and color contrasts, and providing alternative text for images and graphics.
The session also provides resources, including workshop descriptions, slide presentations, and student response system tools that attendees can use to enhance accessibility training at their institutions. The presenter will emphasize a shift from a deficit approach to one that recognizes the “built environment” as the primary barrier to access, allowing educators to create materials that benefit all learners, regardless of ability status.
Join us to learn actionable strategies for designing impactful workshops that promote inclusive teaching practices and support student success across various learning needs.
