Summary
Accessibility efforts often rely on one-time remediation, but ongoing content creation quickly reintroduces issues. This session demonstrates how PREP (PDF Remediation Platform) enables a scalable model combining automation (using APIs integrated into LMS) with human expertise and continuous auditing of document repositories. Attendees will learn how to apply automation where it works best, retain human oversight where it matters, and build workflows that maintain accessibility over time.
Abstract
Higher education institutions are under increasing pressure to meet ADA Title II requirements, yet accessibility efforts often remain fragmented and reactive.
With continuous content creation across departments, documents frequently become inaccessible again after remediation, creating recurring compliance gaps. This is not a one-time problem—it is an ongoing operational challenge.
This session introduces a practical model enabled by PREP (PDF Remediation Platform), focused on operationalizing accessibility through three integrated layers.
The first layer applies automation to high-volume, repeatable tasks such as tagging, detection, and initial remediation, enabling accessibility to be embedded into LMS, CMS, and repository workflows.
The second layer emphasizes human expertise, where complex documents—including forms, tables, and scanned content—require manual intervention to ensure accuracy and usability.
The third layer introduces continuous auditing of document repositories and web content, allowing institutions to monitor accessibility over time, identify new issues, and prevent accessibility drift.
Together, these layers create a closed-loop system where audit, remediation, and validation are connected.
Rather than treating accessibility as a one-time effort, this session reframes it as an operational workflow. Attendees will gain practical principles for applying automation effectively, incorporating human oversight where needed, and building systems that can sustain accessibility at scale.
Keypoints
- One-time remediation fails as documents become inaccessible again through ongoing content creation.
- A scalable ecosystem must combine automation, human remediation, and continuous monitoring.
- Continuous auditing of document repositories prevents accessibility drift and sustains long-term compliance.
