This session empowers attendees to enhance content inclusivity and empower screen reader users while reducing manual work.
Abstract
How can you speed up accessibility remediation while improving the quality of alt text, math accessibility, and overall document usability? This BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), hands-on pre-conference workshop focuses on using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot to remediate documents, generate high-quality alt text, and create accessible math.
Designed for accessibility professionals, educators, digital content creators, and instructional designers, this session provides tested, practical prompts and guided practice using real-world examples typically seen in higher education online courses. Participants will use AI to create alt text for infographics, diagrams, charts, tables, graphs, and complex visuals, as well as generate accurate, screen reader-friendly descriptions for math and equations—reducing reliance on time-intensive methods like MathML.
Attendees will also learn how to use AI to streamline document remediation workflows for Word and PowerPoint, significantly reducing manual effort while improving accessibility outcomes. Examples will be provided however participants are encouraged to bring their own documents, images, and math content to apply these techniques directly to their work.
Throughout the session, participants will explore best practices for using AI responsibly and effectively in accessibility work. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped to accelerate their remediation processes, enhance content inclusivity, and better support screen reader users and individuals with visual, learning, and cognitive disabilities.
For each remediation scenario, participants will use AI tools to generate accessible outputs and share their results, clearly identifying the AI platform used. This process enables comparison across tools and provides participants with documented deliverables they can take back to their institutions to support adoption of AI-assisted accessibility.

Kristin Juhrs Kaylor, M.A. is the Senior Accessibility Instructional Designer at The University of Alabama, Office of Teaching Innovation and Digital Education. She has over 29 years of experience in education accessibility, over 18 years of experience as an educator (online learning, publications, and teaching), and over 14 years of instructional design experience. For the past 8 years, she has led The University of Alabama’s digital accessibility efforts, establishing and directing UA Online’s course accessibility initiative and contributing to the University’s recognition as a national leader in online course accessibility. She is a Certified Adobe PDF Accessibility Trainer. She holds Section 508 web standards and authoring accessible documents certificates through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. She authored “Chapter 11: Six Keys for Accessible Online Course Development” for the Quality Matters book, A Guide to Digital Accessibility: Policies, Practices, and Professional Development.
