Summary
This workshop is geared toward document remediators and testers. We will look at common problems that can make documents hard to understand, even if they pass tests like Adobe Acrobat Checker. You will learn about issues with headings, drop caps, lists, bullets, special letter combinations (ligatures), and complicated tables. You will hear how these problems sound on a screen reader, learn how to find these problems, and fix them.
Abstract
This session expands the knowledge of document remediators on key flaws in documents that affect the readability and usability of the content, even when a document completely passes the Adobe Acrobat Checker and other checkers that evaluate for PDF/UA compliance. We explore heading structure, drop caps, lists, bullets, ligatures, and complex table structure. Attendees will hear the screen reader experience, learn how to navigate the document, and fix the errors we find. By the end of this workshop, attendees will obtain key skills in identifying roadblocks, addressing accessibility challenges, and enhancing the overall quality and inclusivity of their documents. This session is ideal for document remediators, accessibility specialists, content creators, and anyone involved in producing digital documents who seeks to go beyond compliance and ensure a seamless reading experience for all users.
