Summary
Creating accessible materials from inaccessible Power Point slides needs to be handled differently for students using a screen reader, than for students using text-to-speech software. I will present all of the processes you need to follow to give your student effective, usable format for these types of materials.
Abstract
PowerPoint slides are usually inaccessible from their creation. Text boxes, floating text, strange combinations of layouts, and automatic bullets, all make for difficult formatting when you are trying to create something accessible for a student using a Screenreader.
The trick is to extract as much text as you can, add what is missing, and present the information in a well-formatted Microsoft Word (or other text-based) file so it will be read properly by a screen reader.
I will demonstrate this process, and you can follow along using a lab computer to create your own accessible document from an inaccessible PowerPoint file. You will receive a copy of my extensive Alternate Format Production manual, which includes the instructions on how to create these types of accessible files, along with other information about how to handle alternate media requests.
Attendees should leave the session feeling confident that they can make these types of files accessible in the future.
