Summary of Session

Two learning centers, one state, equivalent efforts, great need, progress, but…. Hear how the two learning centers you heard from last year are continuing to address universal design for learning and accessibility using a bottom up approach (no University, provost, other letters requiring implementation).

Abstract

The presenters will share steps taken, barriers or stumbling blocks, and progress made in efforts to incorporate universal design and accessibility into campus culture since November of 2014. The initial roadmap for implementation presented previously will be revisited, addressing adaptations made based on University partner feedback. Important collaborations with University partners, views of faculty and staff, lessons learned, and resources for helping others gain positive ground in their efforts to promote universal design for learning will be integrated.

Speaker Bio(s)

Deb Castiglione

Deb Castiglione is the Universal Design & Instructional Technology Specialist at the University of Kentucky, where she earned a doctorate in distance learning. She brings skills, knowledge, and experience in instructional design/development, universal design, accessibility, and assistive technology. Deb has worked with children and adults with disabilities. She has developed and taught courses in instructional design, assistive technology, universal design, distance education: delivery, and instructional technology for the University of Kentucky, Gateway Community & Technical College, the University of Cincinnati, and Northern Kentucky University.

Beth Case

Beth Case is the Program Manager for Digital, Emerging, and Assistive Technologies at the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Louisville. She has two Master’s degrees, one in Clinical Psychology and one in Instructional Technology. She is also completing her dissertation for a doctoral degree in Instructional Technology. Prior to returning to graduate school, Beth worked in postsecondary disability services for 13 years. Her background in both disability services and instructional technology prepares her for helping faculty make online courses accessible to students with disabilities. She stays on top of emerging trends in using technology in education and enjoys sharing that knowledge with others.
