Abstract
Captioning to enable access for people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing was the start of a domino effect that continues to have an impact. That first domino fell as a result of governments requiring that TV and video content be captioned for people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. We could not have imagined the dominos would continue to fall, enabling captioning to impact the lives of preschoolers, seniors, people struggling to learn English as their additional language, students in education, workers in the workplace, people looking at all sort of screens in all sorts of places.

Eileen Hopkins
EH's back ground is in education. She worked at one of the UKs first autism specialist schools before moving into advisory and development work in autism. For 16 years she was Director of Development and National Services for the National Autistic Society. She was Special Advisor, autism, policy and practice for Autistica the UK autism research organisation. Before joining Ai-Media as Executive Director she undertook extensive autism consultancy internationally including work in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Singapore. She is the Autism Consultant to the Shirley Foundation. She was part of the WHO expert group (autism) She served on the Board of the Zurich (insurance) Foundation for 10 years. Eileen joined Ai-Media as Executive Director and Board member in 2014.
