Summary

Alternate format production processes for the beginner-to-intermediate participant. Session will be interactive, allowing participants to try different software and hardware. Attendees should come away with solid information on how to provide students with alternate format and an understanding of the industry’s best practices.

Abstract

The alternate format process can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right processes, tools, and staffing, the alternate format process can move smoothly from first student request to provision of effective alternate format. This lab-based presentation will allow you to practice all the steps involved in alternate format production, and to learn all of the best practices and helpful shortcuts needed to run efficient alternate format production for your students. We will talk about recommended hardware and software for getting the job done, as well as share our working alternate format processes. Takeaways will include a complete alternate format production manual and access to some basic tools like a sample Excel database and request forms. This session is intended for beginner to intermediate-level.

Susan Kelmer

Susan Kelmer is the Alternate Format Access Coordinator for Disability Services at the University of Colorado Boulder. She has worked for more than fifteen years to assist students with print disabilities in accessing print materials of all kinds. She has presented multiple sessions at the Accessing Higher Ground Conference and the COLTT conference over the last 12 years. She is currently the Co-Chair of the Access Technologists Higher Education Subcommittee (ATHES) of the Colorado-Wyoming Consortium of Support Programs for Students with Disabilities, and is currently an active member and past secretary of the Access Technologists Higher Education Network (ATHEN).

Pamela Starks

Pam Starks is the Assistive Technology Specialist for the Disability Services office at the Boulder County Campus of Front Range Community College. She has worked in the field of assistive technology for more than fifteen years. Pam assists students in finding technology tools for their success each semester.
